Transcript – Use your imagination to Create your Dream Life

Hey, everyone. Welcome to another episode of the Awakened Living Podcast. I’m your host, Robbie J Bone, and today is another episode of the Wisdom of the Week, where I share weekly wisdom experiences and epiphanies that have come through throughout the week. So today we’re talking about the power and the magic of imagination. And I want to share with you some aspects of how you can use your imagination to enhance your life, to create the life that you want to live, and to become the person that you know you’re capable of being, right? We all know that there’s certain things that hold us back in life. We all know there’s certain qualities that we could be, and maybe we’re just not quite there yet. And so it is possible to become kind of our ideal person, our dream person, from an embodied place and from a place of self-love, right? Because this is about growing into who we’re meant to be, not becoming someone because we don’t like ourselves. It’s not like I don’t like myself, so I want to become someone better and different because I really hate myself. It’s like, no, I love myself, and I want to be more aligned with my authentic self, my true self, my soul, my true nature, and I want to live a beautiful human experience, right? So there’s a very important nuance in that.

So when we look at imagination, imagination is known in many different wisdom traditions and esoteric teachings. And even now, science speaks to the power of imagination and that our imagination is actually far more real than we realize, right? Even you’ve probably heard some wisdom traditions say that our dream life is more our real life than our waking life, right? So this thing that we say is just a dream, it’s just your imagination, is actually more real than we realize. So I know for me on my path, I struggled with this because we grow up and we got to think, and we got to think in a straight line and get things done and go to school and do all those things, right? Straight line thinking. And I lost my imagination for a lot of my life because I played a lot of video games. It was a serious problem in my life, actually, for many years. It was an addiction. So I played a lot of video games, and I watched a lot of television. And the thing about television and video games is that they kind of suck our imagination, right? We don’t have to use our imagination when we’re doing these things. It’s like autopilot. And I actually lost my ability to really have a clear and vivid imagination because of that. And many people have this experience where we grow older, and it’s like we remember being a kid and, like, this whole world in our mind, and then we lose it, and we all have the power to bring it back. We all have the power to cultivate it. It’s like a muscle, it’s like a skill. And it just takes practice and time.

So when I was getting into certain spiritual practices, certain meditations, and also certain shamanic lineages talk about journey work, where we journey into the spirit realm to get answers, to connect with certain spiritual beings and to potentially do healing for ourselves or others. And so in that shamanic realm, we’re told that our imagination is real. We’re told that we need to trust our imagination. And I remember I was probably about 16 or 17 years old when I did this for the first time. And I had many images come through, and I didn’t trust them. I’m like, I think I’m just making this up because they can be a little bit outlandish. And so I judged them and I didn’t trust them. And with time, I’ve learned to trust. I’ve learned to trust. So I encourage you to cultivate that trust.

And so, all of this being said, I want to share with you how we can use our imagination, the power of our imagination to influence and support our kind of waking reality, our everyday reality, our physical world, our human world, our emotional world, our mental world, our relationships, right? So another story that helps outline the power of imagination. And this is a simple study that they did. It was a scientific study. And they studied people who played basketball and practiced a certain amount every week. They went to the gym, they shot hoops or whatever. I don’t play basketball, so I’m just using the lingo I know of. They shot hoops and did them some alley-oops and all that. And they improved because they were practicing. And then they had another group of people who spent the same amount of time every week to practice. In their mind. They didn’t go physically anywhere. They used their mind and their imagination to practice. And what they found is that not only did they both improve—the people who went physically and the people who imagined it—they actually found that the people who imagined it often got better faster than the people who were physically doing this. And why is that? That’s a very interesting thought, right? It kind of bursts some bubbles. Well, it’s because our inner state of being and our belief in our capacity and our belief in ourself and how we perceive ourself influences how we live our life, right? And how we even hold ourselves. If we believe ourselves to be confident and strong, we have a straighter spine. If we believe ourselves to be weak or inferior, then we’ll bend over and we’ll hunch our back and we won’t stand up for ourselves, right? And so what we believe about ourselves has a tremendous effect on us. And when we use our imagination, we can change how we believe in ourselves because we make it part of our inner being, our emotional body, and even our physical body, right? And so imagination is a very powerful tool. Very powerful.

So one of the ways I really love to work with imagination is I was telling this to some people yesterday. We had a men’s circle here, and I was sharing this as an example that some people are really good in conflicts and really good in disagreements or, like, debates or these types of things. They’re quick on their feet. They can think about things. And for me, historically, I’m always open to changing. And historically, I have not been that guy often. I’m the guy that in those moments, I say things and I’m like, did that seriously just come out of my mouth? I can’t believe I just said that. And then later on, I’ll think back to that conflict or that conversation or that situation, and I’ll be like, why the hell did I say that? Why did I agree to that? Why did I say yes to that? Where did that come from? It’s a very funny thing, right? And sometimes in the past, this would create a negative loop in my mind. I would kind of regret it and feel negative and get hard on myself and so on and so forth. And then I realized I don’t want to be in this loop anymore. And I came to know myself as, like, maybe not being that guy that’s quick on his feet. That’s okay. So I did two things. One is just in that moment, I would just try to not—I try to keep my mouth shut and just say less and then deal with it later. And then post kind of making a fool of myself or whatever you want to say afterward when I would be in that space of like, did I just say that? Regretting it, thinking how it could have been different, I’ll use my imagination. I’ll stop and think about it and go through the conversation again, go through the conflict again, put myself there, feel myself there, see the person in front of me, really imagine it. And I’ll change the memory. I’ll imagine myself being the man that I desire to be in that situation. Say the thing that I would like to say, and I’ll switch it. And that simple practice in any moment of regret—how could I have done something differently?—is profound. I encourage you to try it.

So when we look at this in relationships and in conflict and how we show up in the world, this is a great tool to imagine ourselves showing up in the way we want to be. How do you want to be? Imagine it first, grounded in your system. When we look at it from a spiritual perspective, meaning in relationship to our spiritual practice or our spiritual way of life, prayer is an important part of the spiritual path. Every tradition has some form of prayer. And so prayer can feel a little weird sometimes because it can be a little bit feel like we’re begging for help or something, and it’s not always the most empowered place. And the way that I like to look at prayer is like it’s a co-creation between our soul, our personality, and God. And so we’re basically using those different aspects of our reality to then formulate a prayer, which is then bringing the spiritual into the physical. And it’s a form of manifestation. And this is one reason that prayer is so powerful, especially when we align our prayers with God’s will for us and our soul’s will for us, and our personality humbles itself and surrenders to that and then co-creates with it, right? And so we can take that prayer to the next level, right? Like really contemplating a prayer and really feeling what we want that prayer to be for our life or for another. And then same thing. Not just speaking it, not just using words. Use your imagination, use your mind. Think about it. Imagine it to be real. Even if you just do it for 60 seconds, it will add power to your prayer and it will bring it more into the present moment to really use your imagination to see it, to feel it, to know it to be true.

And when we look at imagination in relationship to our fears in life, this is a simple practice that can be very profound. So often

when we have a fear—well, first of all, fear is like not reality. It’s a projection into the future of usually what’s happened to us in the past, and we’re afraid it’s going to happen again or that it’s going to get worse or so on and so forth. So often the reality of what would happen, even in the worst-case scenario, is not as bad as we think it to be in the present moment. And sometimes if we put ourselves in that future with our imagination and realize it’s not as bad, it can actually help to manage the fear in the moment. So an example of this: Let’s say you’re afraid of public speaking. You’re really anxious about it and you’ve got some sort of speaking engagement. Well, what’s really the fear there? The fear is usually the fear of judgment, the fear of being rejected, right? The fear of losing your reputation. And so if you put yourself in that situation and you imagine yourself on stage or wherever you’re speaking and people think, man, that was a stupid speech, or whatever, the fear is like, man, you make a fool of yourself, you forget your lines, you got to walk off stage. Just think of what is the worst thing that would really realistically happen? Probably that everyone’s bored. You make a mistake, you fumble your words, you’re kind of anxious, and maybe you even just stop halfway through and leave. And it’s like, really? Is that really even that bad? If you imagine yourself there, and then you imagine yourself going through those motions, going home, going on with your life. How would you deal with it? You’ll find that if you look at that, you’ll deal with it actually really well. You’ll be fine. Okay, you’ll feel bad about yourself for a while, but what would you do? Proactively, like, okay, you’d pick yourself up, you’d call a friend, so on and so forth. And the people who have this judgment towards you, for this one time, you spoke in public and made a bit of a fool of yourself, they’re going to forget about you. People don’t remember us. People are concerned about themselves. They don’t care. They’re going to forget about it the next day, right? It’s really not as big of a deal as we think it to be. And it can be helpful to imagine those worst-case scenarios, like your partner breaking up with you, a marriage ending, someone dying. Like, those things are negative. We don’t desire them. And also, we’re strong. Human beings are resilient. Human beings are adaptable. We can handle those adversities in our life. And so if you place yourself in that situation, you will find that you’re far more capable than you believe yourself to be. If you put yourself in your imagination, right, realize it’s not so bad.

So those are some ways, right? Imagination is powerful. Your imagination is real. And you can use it to the benefit of your life, can use it to embody certain qualities, to feel yourself as confident, as strong, as loving, as peaceful, as joyful, as compassionate. You can use it to actually improve your relationships. You can use it to overcome your fears, and you can use it to manifest and create through prayer and visualization. These things are powerful. So I encourage you to go forth and use your imagination. After this podcast, when you’re done listening, take a few moments, sit down, breathe, and imagine whatever you want. Use your imagination. Five minutes, ten minutes. Trust it. Even if you just—even if you can see like, almost nothing in your imagination. Even if you’re like, I’m so bad at this. Just trust. Just trust. Even if you can hardly see anything, just trust it and continue to practice, practice, practice, and it will get better. So I hope this was helpful for you, hope this is inspiring, and I would love to hear from you. If this podcast was helpful, please share it with some friends.
